I make my living in the field of Public Art. Projects are competitive commissions offered through percent for art programs around the Country. The budget reserved for artwork arises out of a percentage of the construction cost of a new or remodeled government building. These projects are generally large in scale, interior or exterior 3-D or 2-D and must be constructed in durable materials to withstand the elements and the public environment. Thematically the work must relate to the site and be accessible to the people who will be viewing it. My Public Art can be seen on my website.
Many of the works I am showing here have been created as prototypes or studies for larger pieces and concepts. I find that I prefer working on a small scale in developing new ideas. I will often scale-up small drawings when developing a project. For large sculptural work I will employ an engineer, fabricator and other subs who work directly from my drawings to create the final sculpture.
While the completion of the resulting work is satisfying, much of the process involves project management, coordination, phone calls, meetings, travel, permits, insurance, endless emails, etc. This aspect is a necessary evil for success in this field.
My first love is working directly with media with my hands. Finding time for this is a premium. I was pleased to find FAA (recommended by a friend) as it provides a venue to show more intimately scaled work. Plus, it appears to be a thriving and friendly community of artists.
